Make your transition to Princeton easy with this move in guide.
Your Princeton University housing contract will include the actual street address of your rental unit so that you may locate it online prior to arrival. Additionally, the Princeton University website has a section titled "Getting to Campus" to assist with your arrival no matter what means of transportation you use.
- Electronically accept your rental contract online at Princeton One Stop Housing (POSH).
- Submit your security deposit with a completed W-8 (Visit Reason form with W-8) or W-9.
- Obtain appropriate personal property insurance.
- Submit the lead acknowledgement form.
- Read the New Jersey "Truth in Renting" publication.
- Establish utility billing in your name where necessary.
- Obtain a parking permit if you have a vehicle.
- Contact your child's school district.
- Make key pickup arrangements with the Faculty & Staff Housing and Real Estate Services Office at least a week in advance of your arrival.
- Make arrangements to pay your rent.

A security deposit equal to one month's rent is due prior to your occupancy and may be paid by check, money order, electronic transfer or cash. Credit cards are not accepted, and keys cannot be provided until your deposit is paid. The appropriate tax form must accompany your payment; see the section on Forms W-8 and W-9.
Check or money order
Check or money order should be made payable to the Trustees of Princeton University and should include your rental unit address in the memo line of your check or money order so that your security deposit account is properly credited. The security deposit should be mailed to:

Cash payments may be made to the Cashier. The Cashier's office is part of the Office of Finance & Treasury and is located on the 7th Floor of New South. When making a cash payment, notify the cashier to credit chart string # 13140 A0020 2534 AM840. A copy of the payment receipt should be delivered to the Housing Office along with the appropriate tax form(s).

Your security deposit will be deposited in an interest bearing account. Federal regulations governing such accounts require that you submit to the University a Form W-9 (U.S. residents and non-residents with a social security number) or a Form W-8 (non-residents of the U.S without a social security number).
If you are utilizing the W-8 form, you must provide a copy of your passport, visa, and a completed Visit Reason Form. When completing the Form W-8, in Part I, item 3 (permanent address), write your home country address. In Part I, item 4, write your Princeton NJ rental address.
Print and complete the appropriate form. Additional Instructions for completion are included on the form. Original signatures are needed on the forms.
If you pay your security deposit by check, money order or electronic transfer:
- Print the appropriate form(s).
- Follow the instructions on the form as you complete it.
- Mail your completed form(s) to the address below. Include a copy of your visa and passport and Visit Reason Form with Form W-8.
- Attach your check or money order to the form, if applicable.

If you pay your security deposit by cash:
Bring your completed Form W-8, Visit Reason form and a copy of your visa and passport, or your completed Form W-9, to check-in.
Personal property protection
All University lease and contract holders are required to carry personal property protection (renter’s) insurance while living in University rental apartments and houses. The minimum acceptable level of coverage is $4000.
Personal liability coverage
If you have a pet, you must also carry personal liability coverage. The minimum acceptable level of coverage is $100,000. You may keep pets only after registering them with Housing and Real Estate Services at Princeton One Stop Housing (POSH).
The University does not require the contract holder to buy coverage from any specific vendor.
Proof of coverage
Proof of all required insurance coverage must be provided to Housing and Real Estate Services prior to the contracted move in date and upon contract renewal or upon request.
Housing and Real Estate Services will accept a copy of the declarations page from your insurance policy, or a copy of your insurance policy, as proof. Because this is a contractual requirement, failure to provide proof of insurance will be considered a violation of the terms and conditions of occupancy.
The University is required by federal law to provide you, the contract holder, with the results of lead paint tests obtained for selected University apartments. Please read the lead disclosure statement at the link below. Print and complete the acknowledgement form and return it to the Housing and Real Estate Services office at check in. You may also want to read the U.S. Environmental Agency publication "Protect Your Family From Lead in Your Home."
The New Jersey Department of Community Affairs has produced a reference guide for the Truth-in-Renting Act, passed in 1976. It will help you understand your rights as a renter, and the responsibilities and rights of landlords. Take a few minutes to become familiar with it.
Before you arrive in Princeton, contact local utility companies to set up accounts in your name. Review the "Utilities" section under "Resident Services" for more information.
As a resident in University rental housing, you are required to obtain a parking permit from Transportation & Parking Services if you plan to bring a vehicle to campus. Transportation & Parking Services is your contact for parking permit registration, regulations, enforcement policies, and fees, fines and appeals, and parking lot maps.
To avoid ticketing and towing, make arrangements with Transportation & Parking Services for visitors to park on campus ahead of their arrival.
To make sure your key is ready when you get to campus, contact the Faculty & Staff Housing Office at (609) 258-3460, Opt. 4, or at firstname.lastname@example.org at least a week in advance of your arrival.
Keep in mind that you cannot pick up your key until you have electronically accepted your contract and paid your security deposit. You will not be able to move into your residence prior to your contract start date.
During business hours
You can pick up your key from 9:00 AM to 4:30 PM at the Faculty & Staff Housing Office on the fifth floor of New South.
You may make alternate arrangements to pick up your key if you are unable to arrive during regular business hours. Before you arrive, be sure to:

- Electronically accept your contract.
- Pay your security deposit.
Your rent will be automatically deducted from your paycheck by the Office of Finance & Treasury. For administrative and faculty employees the deduction is made at the end of the month. For bi-weekly employees the deduction is made mid-month and at the end of the month.

Your rent is billed by the Office of Finance & Treasury and can be paid by check, money order, cash or online. Credit cards are not accepted.
